I guess this won't bother most people but it's always been an interest of mine so it definitely lessens my enjoyment of the film. It has no reverence for it's source material and makes little effort to show us what's interesting and special about ancient Egypt.
ACTORS THAT WHERE IN THE MUMMY MOVIES MOVIE
Compare that to any of the places we visit in the Mummy, which look like shitty tv movie sets. Except for Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones has a certain respect for the foreign places it depicts - or to put it another way, it makes an effort to convey their beauty and grandeur and mystery. Those have some great set design and cinematography, but the Mummy is just flat and boring. It also lacks any of the visual artistry that went into the Indiana Jones films. It just doesn't quite pull off what it's going for most of the time - most story beats are just a bit too predictable, the jokes miss more often than they hit, the characters are a little too generic compared to something like Raiders of the Lost Ark. The primary setting for the Mummy trilogy is in Egypt, and its easy to assume that thats where the movies were. I like plenty of bad but fun movies, I have no problem tolerating a little silliness and flaws if a movies still fun but this one just doesn't do it for me. I guess it's got a kind of nostalgic charm for some people, but I still think it's a really weak film. But a pulpy, fun Indiana Jones-esque romp that doesn't take itself too seriously? In that regard it succeeds on nearly every level, and was just as entertaining yesterday as it was nearly 20 years ago.Īnyone else think 1999's The Mummy is friggin' awesome? Nosferatu meets Lawrence of Arabia this is not. What this long-winded intro is driving at is this: The Mummy totally holds up, and is severely underrated, if you enter with the proper expectations. It had honestly settled into a sort of "guilty pleasure" nostalgia nexus to collect cobwebs along with Dragonball Z and The Pagemaster. I'm 26 now and before yesterday I probably hadn't sat down and watched the entire thing in a good 6-7 years. I'd say the only films I've seen more times from beginning to end would probably be Jaws, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Fugitive (thanks TNT), but unlike those other films, I hadn't continued watching it religiously into my adulthood. This list of The Mummy actors includes any The Mummy actresses and all other actors. It's one I owned on VHS as a youngling (born in '91) and watched damn near every day. The Mummy cast list, listed alphabetically with photos when available. This latest abominable remake got my nostalgia-senses tingling, so I decided to re-watch one of my childhood favorites, the 1999 version of The Mummy.
